Abstract

ABSTRAK: Tanaman Pare (Momordica charantia L.) ialah bagian dari famili Cucurbitaceae yang kaya akan senyawa metabolit sekunder dan sering dimanfaatkan di berbagai wilayah sebagai obat sakit gigi, diare, dan bisul, serta infeksi akibat virus dan bakteri. Salah satu bagian tanaman yang banyak dimanfaatkan adalah bagian daunnya. Artikel ini disusun dengan tujuan untuk mengumpulkan berbagai studi dan penelitian mengenai senyawa metabolit sekunder dan aktivitas antibakteri dari daun pare (Momordica charantia L.) melalui pendekatan narrative review. Sumber literatur yang digunakan pada penelitian ini diperoleh melalui pencarian berdasarkan judul, abstrak, dan kata kunci serta Boolean Operator (AND,OR), yaitu “momordica charantia leaves AND antibacterial activity” dan “momordica charantia leaves AND phytochemical OR secondary metabolites” pada berbagai sumber basis data seperti ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, dan Pubmed. Kriteria inklusi yang digunakan pada artikel ini adalah literatur yang disajikan dalam bahasa Indonesia atau bahasa Inggris, dapat diakses secara free full text, dipublikasikan pada rentang periode tahun 2015 hingga 2025, membahas ekstrak daun pare dan membahas uji antibakteri daun pare menggunakan metode difusi cakram, serta artikel yang menggunakan desain penelitian eksperimental. Berdasarkan hasil penelusuran, didapatkan 11 artikel literatur yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi. Hasil kajian literatur ini menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak daun pare memiliki positif mengandung metabolit sekunder dan memiliki kemampuan untuk menekan pertumbuhan bakteri gram positif, yaitu Staphylococcus aureus.

ABSTRACT: The bitter melon plant (Momordica charantia L.) is part of the Cucurbitaceae family, rich in secondary metabolites and is often used in various regions as a remedy for toothache, diarrhea, boils, and viral and bacterial infections. One of the most frequently used parts of the plant is its leaves. This article was compiled with the aim of collecting various studies and research on secondary metabolites and the antibacterial activity of bitter melon leaves (Momordica charantia L.) through a narrative review approach. The literature sources used in this study were obtained through searches based on titles, abstracts, keywords, and Boolean operators (AND, OR), namely “momordica charantia leaves AND antibacterial activity” and “momordica charantia leaves AND phytochemical OR secondary metabolites” in various database sources such as ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Pubmed. The inclusion criteria used in this article were literature presented in Indonesian or English, accessible as free full text, published between 2015 and 2025, discussing bitter melon leaf extract and discussing the antibacterial test of bitter melon leaves using the disk diffusion method, as well as articles using experimental research designs. Based on the study findings, 11 literature articles were found that met the inclusion criteria. The results of this literature review indicate that bitter melon leaf extract contains secondary metabolites and has the ability to reduce the growth of gram positive bacteria, namely Staphylococcus aureus.
