EFFECT OF CIGARETTE SMOKE IN QUALITY AND QUANTITY SPERMATOZOA

Cigarette is one of the processed tobacco with or without the use of additives. Globally, people use cigarette increasely but  the prevalence of smokers in developed countries would be reduced. WHO tells that the number of smokers increased by 2.1 percent per year in developing countries,while in developed countries this figure declined about 1.1 percent per year. Cigarettes cause cell damage because cigarettes contain ingredients that can form free radicals. Free radicals are products formed by chemical reactions in the body (eg, cell metabolism, respiration, excessive exercise) and from the environment polluted by smoke and fumes. Smoke contains many chemicals include nicotine, carbon monoxide, tar and others . So that the effects of these chemicals can disturb the quality and quantity (number, motility and morphology) spermatozoa and damage to the cells of the testes. Free radicals from increasing smoke called ROS. It has  the effects in the sperm that can damage deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and cell apoptosis sperma. Smoke influences agglutination of sperm that causes decrease in sperm motility.

Abstrak

Rokok adalah salah satu hasil olahan tembakau dengan menggunakan bahan ataupun tanpa bahan tambahan. Secara global, penggunaan rokok memang meningkat tetapi prevalensi perokok di negara maju justru berkurang. WHO menyebutkan, jumlah perokok meningkat 2,1 persen per tahun di negara berkembang sedangkan di negara maju angka ini menurun sekitar 1,1 persen per tahun. Rokok menyebabkan kerusakan sel karena dalam rokok mengandung bahan yang dapat membentuk radikal bebas. Radikal bebas adalah produk yang terbentuk dari proses reaksi kimia dalam tubuh (misalnya metabolisme sel, pernapasan, olah raga yang berlebihan) dan juga dari lingkungan yang terpolusi oleh asap rokok dan asap kendaraan. Asap rokok mengandung berbagai bahan kimia antara lain nikotin, karbon monoksida, tar dan lain-lain sehingga efek bahan kimia tersebut ternyata dapat menganggu kualitas dan kuantitas (jumlah, motilitas dan morfologi) spermatozoa epididimis dan menyebabkan kerusakan sel-sel testis. Radikal bebas yang berasl dari asap rokok yang mengalami peningkatan disebut sebagai ROS . ROS memiliki efek didalam sperma dapat merusak deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) dan apoptosis sel sperma.Paparan asap rokok juga menyebabkan aglutinasi sperma sehingga berakibat terhadap menurunnya motilitas sperma.
